“Do you recognize me as a country?” the simple question had been answered by only blank stares, or the person Sealand had been talking to would just turn and walk away without a second glance. Except for one.
Latvia was quiet and always seemed scared of something, always shaking. He had dirty blonde hair with sparkling blue eyes, and he was the only one who even bothered to answer Sealand’s question at the world meeting.
“W-well are you a country?” Came the response to the question Sealand had asked, making his heart drop just a little. At least he had finally gotten a response.
“Of course I am!” Sealand smiled, finally someone didn’t ignore him like some kind of pest.
“Th-then I g-guess you are a country.” The nation tilted his head as Sealand stuck out his hand and responded.
“I’m Sealand! Wanna be friends?” Sealand smiled as Latvia awkwardly shook his hand, still shaking nervously.
“I-I’m Latvia…and…I-I’ll be your friend.” Latvia replied with a nervous smile on his face that quickly disappeared as Russia called for him. “I-I have to go. S-Sorry!”
“Aw, bye.” Sealand said as he watched Latvia hurry away. His only friend. But at least he had one. Sealand smiled at this thought, even after Britain called for him to come sit and listen to the boring meetings all day. It was a world meeting, after all, Sealand sighed. At least he might be able to sit next to his friend, and a smile touched his lips again as he entered the large room.

Four very long and boring hours later, the world meeting ended. It was the very first that Sealand had gotten to attend, and he clearly expected more out of it. At first it was just a bunch of pointless arguing about pointless topics, then Germany yelled at them all to shut up and follow his rules. Sealand didn’t even get to sit near Latvia. Britain said Sealand had to sit near him, which was a seat all the way across the room from Latvia, making Sealand think Britain didn’t want him to have friends. After a while (which was probably only around ten minutes) during the meeting, Britain saw that Sealand was about to fall asleep with boredom, so he put a piece of paper from his notebook in front of Sealand, and Sealand drew on it for a while, before looking around the massive amount of countries present to find Latvia. When he finally found Latvia, his hair shining brightly in the sun that gleamed through the windows in a really pretty way, he waved across the table at him as he blushed at his last thought, but Latvia was too busy taking notes on what the speaker(France) was saying to see Sealand wave.
All in all, the meeting was one of the most boring experiences of Sealand’s life.
After the meeting was over, all the countries gathered in the conference hall, most debating about what to get for lunch with their friends as they prepared to leave, almost all of them stretching and yawning. Looking through the crowd, Sealand found Latvia, shaking and nodding to something Russia had said, so he went over to see Latvia with a smile on his face.
“Hi Latvia!” Sealant said to him, his smile bright and friendly.
“H-hi Sealand…” Latvia said in response as Russia turned away to talk to the other Baltics, Estonia and Lithuania. “H-how are you?”
“Jolly good, and you?”  Sealand said, glad to finally be out of the boring meeting room.
“F-fine…” Latvia replied, still stuttering and shaking.
“You’re really nervous, aren’t you?” Sealand said, meaning it in a way as though it were kind of cute, not in an insulting way or anything…
Because, well, it was cute…just like Latvia
The thought popped into Sealand’s head without his control, and he blushed.
“W-well…I-I’m always like this.” Latvia blushed as well, and the two nervously looked away from each other.
“Well, we’re friends now, so you don’t have to be nervous around me.” Sealand said, looking back into Latvia’s face, seeing Latvia’s bright blue eyes looking back into his own and noticing what a pretty shade Latvia’s eyes really were.
And then…
He realized that he liked Latvia.
Sealand couldn’t help it and he blushed.
“O-okay…” Latvia said as a tiny smile crept it’s way onto his face. He was really happy to have a friend as…
Well, there wasn’t really a good word to describe Sealand. From what Latvia had seen, Sealand was always happy, cheery, and bursting with energy. He always had a smile on his face and his blue eyes were always shining in a cute way…
And then Latvia, shivering and nervous as ever, blushed. Thinking about all of that caused a rush of heat to come to his face as he realized…
He liked Sealand.
“So do you…want to come to lunch with us? Sealand asked, seeing Britain starting to head over to them.
“I-if it’s okay with Russia…” Latvia said, glancing back toward Russia and taking a few steps toward him, “I-I’ll be right back.”
Sealand watched as Latvia walked carefully toward Russia, shivering as always, when Britain came and tapped him on the shoulder, asking him if he was ready to leave.
“I just want to see if Latvia can come to lunch with us,” Sealand replied, watching Russia push down on the top of Latvia’s head. No wonder Latvia wasn’t very tall… Sealand thought as Latvia hurried back over afterward, a small, scared smile on his face.
“H-he said I could…” Latvia said, blushing slightly as he saw Sealand looking up at him.
“Jolly good, then!” Sealand smiled, a skip in his step as they left in search of a place to eat.

After half an hour of driving around aimlessly in Italy,(the location of the world meeting) Britain gave up all hope of finding a good English restaurant and parked their rental car outside a fancy Italian eatery, deeming it good enough. The whole ride there, Sealand and Latvia talked about anything and everything, and Latvia seemed a lot less nervous now that Russia wasn’t around, going so far as to have an actual smile on his face. A smile that made him seem so cute that Sealand blushed.
When they entered the restaurant, a place that smelled of garlic and other fancy Italian spices and looked just as pretty as the elaborate dishes the came up with, the two young nations decided to sit next to each other in the midst of their conversation about robots and things of the sort from Japan.
After they had taken their seats and ordered, and while Britain was arguing with someone on the phone(probably America) Sealand slipped his hand into Latvia’s. Latvia’s breath caught and he blushed, but smiled afterward. The two nervously looked away, but smiled for the rest of the day.
Maybe they were more then friends, after all.
